Denise had told herself a dozen reasons not to come. She was too old. The science would be beyond her. The other students would be half her age. On a Tuesday morning in February, she came anyway — and by the first tea break, two classmates had already saved her a seat.
“I’d spent thirty years behind a counter,” she says. “I knew how to look after people. I just didn’t have the letters after my name yet.”
SIN’s cohorts are deliberately small, and that’s no accident. In a room of twenty rather than two hundred, trainers learn your name in the first week — and so does everyone else. For Denise, the simulation labs were where the nerves fell away.
"By week two I stopped apologising for being here. This was exactly where I was meant to be."
By her second placement, Denise was the one steadying the nervous twenty-somethings. Thirty years of reading people turned out to be exactly the kind of experience a ward needs. She graduates this year, eligible to register as an Enrolled Nurse.
“It’s never too early to start,” she says, echoing something her trainer told her on day one, “and it’s never too late to belong.”
