The new lab took nine months and a lot of arguing about door widths. It is not a classroom with a bed in it. It is a ward — twelve beds, two handover bays, a working medication room, and the same call-bell system our partner sites run.
“We kept asking one question,” says the campus lead. “Would a nurse walking in off a real shift recognise this room? If the answer was no, we changed it.”
Simulation only works if the room stops being a simulation. Students take handover at the bay, chart on the same forms, and get interrupted — because on a real shift they will be. The mannequins deteriorate on a schedule nobody in the cohort has seen.
“The first time the call bell went off behind me while I was mid-obs, I understood what the trainers had been telling us all term.”
Every cohort now gets lab time in the first fortnight rather than the second term, and placement preparation runs in the room students will have used for months. Trainers can film a scenario and play it back in the debrief next door.
“You cannot talk someone into being calm on a ward,” the campus lead says. “You can only give them enough shifts that it stops being new. That is what the room is for.”
